Introduction:

Business Rules Management Systems (BRMS) simplify the execution of dynamic business policies. In the past, when business policies changed, engineering was notified and the new policies were implemented in the next revision of the software some number of months into the future. This time-frame was not acceptable to e-commerce companies which see changing conditions and policies on a daily, if not hourly, basis. The answer to this problem was to create a system in which the business policies are encoded seperately from their execution. The algorithm that provides this answer is the Rules Engine, the heart of a BRMS.

BRMSs go beyond just a Rules Engine by assisting the development and maintenance of the Business Rules, by assisting the deployment of rules to runtime Rules Engines where the rules are put into effect, and by tracking the usage and performance of the rules and these Rules Engines.
